On a bright, sunny afternoon in Evesham, pupils at Bengeworth C of E Academy were busy laughing, chatting, and moving their bodies on their new outdoor gym; a project funded through an Educational Wellbeing Grant awarded in 2025. The space is filled with equipment including air walkers, waist twisters, and rowing machines, and it has quickly become a lively hub of activity and connection.

The school originally applied for funding with a clear vision:

“We would love to implement outdoor gym equipment into our school to promote physical activity, healthy lifestyles, and overall well-being among our pupils… It also promotes inclusivity, teamwork, and positive social interaction as children of all abilities can enjoy and benefit from it.”

That vision has come to life! The gym is used before school, during break times, and at lunch, giving children regular opportunities to stay active in a fun, accessible way.

Staff have noticed improvements in fitness, coordination, confidence, and social interaction, with pupils naturally encouraging one another as they play and exercise.

Assistant Headteacher Tom Edkins shared how valuable the space has become for pupils who may need time to self‑regulate or decompress, including disadvantaged children and those with a diagnosis of autism. Many of these pupils choose to use the equipment first thing in the morning, helping them feel calm, grounded, and ready for the school day.

The school’s original application emphasised the long‑term impact of the project:

“Outdoor gym equipment provides an opportunity to develop healthy habits from an early age… contributing to a more energised, focused, and confident school community.”

Standing in the sunshine today, watching children support each other, laugh together, and build healthy habits that will last a lifetime, it’s clear that this investment is doing exactly that, strengthening wellbeing, connection, and resilience across the school community.
