Worcestershire County Council’s Countryside and Greenspace Team plays an important role in enhancing the county’s natural environment while supporting the health and wellbeing of residents. The service manages 22 countryside sites across Worcestershire, including country parks, nature reserves and picnic places, alongside delivering initiatives such as Health Walks, volunteering programmes, community greenspace support and large-scale tree planting.

Access to high-quality greenspaces provides opportunities for physical activity, relaxation, social connection and engagement with nature, all of which contribute to improved wellbeing and help tackle health inequalities. Through its work, the service helps residents of all ages and abilities benefit from Worcestershire’s natural assets while encouraging healthier and more active lifestyles.

Thanks to additional joint investment from Worcestershire County Council Public Health and the Countryside and Greenspace Team, Worcester Woods Country Park has recently undergone a series of improvements designed to increase opportunities for physical activity and outdoor recreation. This investment reflects the shared commitment to creating environments that support healthy lifestyles and improve wellbeing for local communities.

As part of the improvement programme, the older children’s play area has been upgraded to create a safer, more accessible and enjoyable space for families. Works have included the renewal of safety surfacing and improvements to pathways between play equipment, helping to enhance accessibility, safety and the overall visitor experience.

The joint investment has also funded the installation of new outdoor fitness equipment and additional calisthenics stations, significantly expanding the park’s free-to-use exercise facilities. The enhanced outdoor gym provides opportunities for people of all ages to improve strength, fitness and overall health in a welcoming outdoor environment, while encouraging residents to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives.

These improvements demonstrate how collaboration between Public Health and the Countryside and Greenspace Team can deliver benefits far beyond traditional health services. By investing in high-quality, accessible greenspaces, Worcestershire is creating opportunities for residents to be more active, connect with nature, spend time with family and friends, and improve their physical and mental wellbeing. The enhancements at Worcester Woods Country Park will help ensure that the site continues to be a valued community asset for years to come.
