Community Stories 2025 | Making space for male guardians with Saturdads

Jemma Bufton, October 22, 2025November 3, 2025

In Malvern, a new project funded by a Public Health Community Wellbeing grant, is helping dads and male guardians connect with their children, boost their wellbeing and build a supportive community.

SaturDads is delivered by Freedom Leisure and Action for Children, with sessions led by qualified coaches from both organisations. Held weekly, the sessions combine physical activity with peer support, offering everything from bouncy castles and obstacle courses to strength, movement and balance games. It’s a space where dads and children can play, bond and grow together.

The grant enabled the team to purchase equipment that will be used year after year, helping the project become a lasting part of the local community. To support its sustainability, the organisers are also exploring donations and small contributions from participants in future.

Tracey Whelan from Freedom Leisure said:

“Support for male parents, carers and guardians is super important as it allows them to connect with other dads and not feel alone in their parenting journeys. It gives them the chance to engage in fun sessions with their children and also access support.”

Gary, a regular at SaturDads, added:

“We get to spend time together here and we both enjoy doing it. I think it really benefits us.”

By creating a welcoming, active and inclusive space, SaturDads is helping to improve mental and physical health, reduce isolation and strengthen family bonds, one Saturday at a time.

This amazing story and video was showcased in our Community Stories 2025 Event, celebrating some of the wonderful grant-funded work of community organisations across Worcestershire.
