Residents in Redditch have been enthusiastically embracing the benefits of Tai Chi through a free outdoor programme delivered in partnership with Redditch Borough Council. The popular sessions have shown how simple, accessible activities in local parks can help people become more active, improve wellbeing and build stronger community connections.  Particularly for those who may be experiencing barriers to participating in other forms of organised physical activity.

Over the summer, for residents who were looking for opportunities to enjoy the great weather and take part in gentle physical activity in a welcoming and supportive environment, this was an ideal solution. Outdoor community Tai Chi sessions offered an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to improve their health, spend time in nature and connect with others locally.  Some of the residents taking part commented that they had already recognised a need to be more physically active, but due to existing health conditions, were limited to the type of activity they could undertake, making this an ideal opportunity.

The Redditch Park Tai Chi programme delivered a free, time-limited 12-week series of sessions, helping residents learn Tai Chi techniques in the inspiring surroundings of Arrow Valley Park, with all the additional health and wellbeing benefits of spending time outdoors. The programme focused on creating the space for people who may not otherwise have engaged with physical activity to do so, while also taking opportunities to connect participants with wider health and wellbeing support available locally, helping residents to discover additional ways to stay active and connected within their community.

The sessions proved highly successful, encouraging participants to become more active while supporting both physical and mental wellbeing. Beyond the exercise itself, the programme helped bring residents together, creating new social connections and reducing isolation.

Importantly, the benefits are expected to continue long after the organised sessions have ended. Participants having learned Tai Chi techniques from a qualified Instructor that can be practised independently at home, helping them maintain healthy habits and remain active throughout the year. Contact details have also been collected, with consent, to support ongoing communication and explore opportunities for the group to continue on a self-sustaining basis. Participants have additionally been signposted to other local Tai Chi and physical activity opportunities, helping them build lasting connections and continue their wellbeing journey beyond the programme.

The free Tai Chi sessions were available to residents weekly throughout July to September.  Redditch residents looking for further opportunities to increase their physical activity and community connections can search online at  Redditch Borough Council Activities and Events or for information about local Redditch venues offering the free Healthy Worcestershire Programme please visit  Healthy Worcestershire.
