Community Stories 2025 | Stepway helps kids turn it around

Jemma Bufton, October 23, 2025October 23, 2025

In the heart of Powick, LINK Community Hub (part of Stepway) has become a lifeline for families seeking connection, support, and hope.

Thanks to a Public Health Community Wellbeing grant, the Hub has created a brand-new Outdoor Therapy Zone. A vibrant, inclusive space where children and families can reconnect with nature, animals, and each other.

This grant was awarded specifically to support LINK’s ‘Turn Around’ programme which provides weekly sessions for young people not currently attending school.

The Forest School setting offers a safe, nurturing environment where these children can engage in therapeutic outdoor activities, build confidence, and take steps toward rejoining education.

The results speak volumes: Of the 12 families who attended the sessions, 5 children have now successfully returned to mainstream education.

Andy, who attends with his son Finley, shared:

“The impact on Finley has been extremely positive. He was introverted and shy, and is now coming out of his shell and thriving. The impact on the family as a whole is that we feel happier and more confident that there is a positive way forward for Finley.”

The grant also enabled two LINK staff members to complete Forest School training, ensuring the long-term delivery of sessions for schools, community groups, and the wider public. The space is now used for workshops, youth programmes, and scheduled public access days, open to all and designed to promote wellbeing, creativity, and community connection.

This inspiring initiative was featured in our Community Stories 2025 Event, celebrating the incredible work of grant-funded organisations across Worcestershire.
