Tucked away behind an estate in Kidderminster, Gilt Edge Bowls Club, is a green haven that has become a lifeline for older residents; many of whom are over 75, with some well into their 90s.
Thanks to a Public Health Community Grant, the club has repaired storm-damaged fencing, purchased beginner-friendly equipment, and launched a successful outreach campaign to welcome new members.
The impact has been profound. One member, who joined after losing her husband, credits the club with saving her life:
“I had given up. If my daughter hadn’t encouraged me to come, I wouldn’t be here.”
The club offers gentle physical activity, fresh air, and a warm social atmosphere.
Keith, the club coordinator, said: “It’s a low-cost way to stay active and connected, we’re seeing real improvements in people’s confidence, mobility, and mental wellbeing.”
With the green now in full swing from April to September, and indoor sessions offered in winter, Gilt Edge Bowling Club is proving that small investments in community sport can deliver life-changing results.
This amazing story and video was showcased in our Community Stories 2025 Event, celebrating some of the wonderful grant-funded work of community organisations across Worcestershire.
