Community Stories 2025 | Creating a Healthier Worcestershire

Jemma Bufton, October 23, 2025October 23, 2025

Worcestershire’s ageing population is growing and so is the need to help older adults stay physically active, socially engaged and healthy.

That’s where the Worcestershire County Council’s Healthy Worcestershire sessions come in. Our free community-based programme is making a real difference!

Every week, hundreds of older residents take part in friendly, fun, local sessions designed to boost physical health, reduce isolation, and improve overall wellbeing.

The sessions are relaxed, welcoming, and tailored to local needs. They include strength and balance classes to help prevent falls, lifestyle advice on topics like healthy eating and weight management, and community safety talks covering scam awareness and digital inclusion.

Participants are also signposted to nearby walking groups, arts projects, and volunteering opportunities.

As we age, staying physically active becomes more important than ever. Regular movement helps maintain strength, flexibility, and independence. It also reduces the risk of falls, something that leads to over 2,000 emergency hospital admissions each year in Worcestershire.

The results speak for themselves. 99% of participants reported leading healthier lifestyles, 70% saw improvements in strength, balance, and flexibility, and many noted reduced reliance on emergency and hospital services.

Maggie, a regular Health Worcestershire attendee said:

“Coming here has totally changed my life. I used to be a recluse and now i’m outgoing. I would recommend it to everyone. It’s just fun!”

This amazing story and video was showcased in our Community Stories 2025 Event, celebrating some of the wonderful grant-funded work of community organisations across Worcestershire.
