Graham, Dines Green Community Centre | Community Stories

Samantha Roberts, August 8, 2024August 22, 2024

“I have only recently moved to the Dines Green area, as my wife sadly passed away and I had to move to a retirement complex which offered more support. I used to be very active but began to find it harder to get around, my mobility changed, and I found I did not know as many people in the area.

I moved into an apartment but felt very lonely… I had a look on the internet about my local community centre and decided to visit. I was welcomed by a Community Builder called Rachael, who spent time chatting to me and finding out what I was interested and what I wanted to do in the community.

I now attend so many things in the week – the lunch club, bingo, craft group, flower arranging, church coffee group, 60+ social group – it’s a busy week and I’m out every day!

I want other people to make friends and feel less lonely, like I did.  I feel like I have a sense of purpose now and talk to so many more people in the week.” Graham, attendee at Dines Greens Community Centre.

This story was created as part of the Celebrating Community Stories Project 2023 – 2024. Public Health at Worcestershire County Council worked with organisations across the County to find out what keeps Worcestershire healthy, active and creative.
