Worcestershire Health Walks growing in numbers

Sam Collison, January 25, 2024January 25, 2024

Worcestershire Health Walks is nearing 2,000 registered walkers across the County, with walkers having the choice of over 200 walks a month to join! New walks started in 2023 in Upton on Severn, Malvern, and Droitwich – with more planned to commence throughout 2024.

A health walk is a short walk undertaken on a regular basis. As well as improving physical health, walks can help with mental wellbeing by providing an opportunity to socialise with other walkers. Walkers are encouraged to go at their own pace so they able to enjoy it and walk groups offer alternate routes and distances to suit all abilities.

Worcestershire Health Walks are:

  • free
  • accessible, sociable, and welcoming to all regardless of ability;
  • at least 30 minutes long and no longer than 90 minutes;
  • local and easily accessible by foot or local public transport;
  • an activity which requires no specialist equipment, everyday clothing & footwear can be worn;
  • a way for walkers to enjoy their local and natural environment; and
  • a great way to socialise and make new friends.

Comments from walkers demonstrate the health and wellbeing impact that joining these regular walking groups can have –

“Joining a Health Walk has given me so much more confidence, I was never very keen to walk alone but joining a Health Walk has meant I walk with other walkers, feel safe and have made new friends”.

“My Health Walk Group is very welcoming and friendly, it is so enjoyable to turn up each week and be led on interesting and varied walks, I have also got to know lots of walks in my local area.

“Regular walking on a Health Walk has helped improve my health, the regular exercise of walking has helped with my physical health as I feel energised after a lovely walk in the fresh air whilst enjoying the lovely Worcestershire countryside”.

“I sometimes felt lonely and depressed at home on my own, now I have weekly walks to join and friends to look forward to seeing each week. The coffee and chat afterwards are a real bonus too”.
