It was recognised that some people in Malvern Hills were finding it hard to get the support they needed for their mental health. Many felt alone or unsure where to turn, and some areas and groups weren’t getting the help they deserved.

To tackle this, the Being Well project started in January 2023, funded by Public Health and Malvern Hills District Council, and run by South Worcestershire Citizens Advice and Age UK Wyvern. Instead of waiting for people to ask for help, Being Well Coordinators go out into local communities—joining groups, attending events, and meeting people where they are. They offer friendly advice, practical help, and connect residents to useful services.

Margaret’s story shows how this approach can change lives. After escaping domestic abuse and moving to the area, she felt isolated and anxious. Thanks to ‘Being Well’, she got help with money worries, setting up her home, renewing her driver’s license, and finding local social groups. With this support, Margaret started to feel more confident and optimistic, and is now rebuilding friendships and a sense of belonging.

The project is making a real difference by helping people sooner, sharing information about local support, and bringing people together at wellbeing events (such as those pictured above). It’s also working to reach groups who might miss out, like men and those living in rural areas, and making it easier for everyone to get involved.

Looking ahead, Being Well plans to train more local group leaders, run more community events, and keep listening to what residents need. The aim is simple: to help everyone in Malvern Hills feel more connected, supported, and able to enjoy better wellbeing for years to come.

Being Well is proving that with the right local partnerships, practical support, and a community-first mindset, it’s possible to foster sustainable mental wellbeing and resilience, one connection at a time.
