The Chase School Malvern has launched a new Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) Kit Loan Scheme, designed to support students’ physical and mental wellbeing by removing financial barriers to participation.
Supported by a Public Health Educational Wellbeing Grant, the initiative aims to promote equal access to one of the UK’s most respected youth development programmes—helping young people build resilience, confidence, and a sense of belonging through outdoor activity and teamwork.
The DofE Award is widely recognised for its positive impact on young people’s health and wellbeing. Through challenges such as the expedition, participants develop physical stamina, emotional resilience, and social connection. However, for many families, the cost of essential expedition kit—such as rucksacks, waterproofs, fleeces, and walking trousers—can be a significant obstacle.
Thanks to the new scheme, students can now borrow high-quality equipment free of charge, making it easier for all to take part and benefit from the programme’s wellbeing outcomes.
Mr Thomas Lloyd Evans, DofE Manager at The Chase, said:
“We want every student to feel that DofE is for them, no matter their background or financial situation. This scheme is about removing obstacles and giving all young people the chance to experience adventure, personal growth, and improved wellbeing.”
Students who have already used the loan system are full of praise. A Year 10 student shared:
“I feel happy that the school provided me with equipment such as walking trousers and socks. It helped me do DofE with my friends and feel more confident outdoors.”A Year 13 student added:
“Being able to borrow an extra waterproof coat and fleece helped me keep warm while in the Lake District during the night. It made the experience much more enjoyable.”
The school hopes the scheme will encourage more students to take part in the DofE programme and gain the physical, emotional, and social benefits it offers.
