A new youth club in Batchley, Redditch is making a real difference to the lives of local young people. Delivered by youth organisation Redditch United in the Community, the project offers a safe, welcoming space for 10–14 year olds to enjoy free hot meals, take part in sports and creative activities, and build positive relationships. Batchley is an area where opportunities for young people can be limited, and this initiative is helping to fill that gap with energy, care, and purpose.
Thanks to the Youth Wellbeing Grant from Public Health at Worcestershire County Council, the club was able to launch with the resources needed to make a meaningful impact. The funding enabled the delivery of healthy meals—often the only hot meal some children receive that week—alongside games, sports equipment, and engaging wellbeing activities. From quizzes and presentations to crafts and team games, the sessions promote healthier lifestyles and encourage young people to stay active and connected.
The impact has been immediate and powerful. Young people are gaining confidence, making friends, and finding a safe space to be themselves. The club is also helping to reduce antisocial behaviour by offering a positive alternative to spending time on the streets. Parents and school staff have praised the initiative for giving children a sense of purpose and belonging.
Billy, age 15, said, “The sports/youth club was good for me as I can be socially awkward around new people, but the coaches made me feel welcome and I got to play some new sports that I haven’t done before. My favourite part was badminton and beating Oli (the coach).”
Tina, a local parent, shared, “The youth sports sessions gave Dexter a safe space to enjoy himself without us having to worry about him out on the street. We need more of these in the area to help our children thrive and be active.”
Caroline, a member of staff at a nearby school, added, “These sorts of projects we are more than happy to support. It gives our students and the young people in the area a better experience after school and a safe space to be active and communicate with others.”
The club’s success is already sparking long-term change. Redditch United in the Community is committed to keeping the sessions going and making them as accessible as possible. They are also looking to expand their work across Redditch, continuing to partner with Worcestershire County Council to support and engage more young people through future initiatives. This isn’t just a short-term project—it’s the beginning of something lasting, sustainable, and full of promise.
