The Worcester Slipper Swap is an innovative community project aimed at reducing the risk of falls among older adults, particularly those who are frail or vulnerable.
The event was hosted by the Worcester City Primary Care Network (PCN) in partnership with Worcester District Collaborative and Worcester City Council, funded by a Worcestershire County Council community grant.
There was a positive turn out at The Guildhall in Worcester City Centre on 9th May, supporting residents aged over 65 with a FREE slipper exchange. Slippers were provided by Robin Elt Shoes, who professionally fitted the slippers at the event.
The project was a response to an increase in hospital admissions for patients who have suffered from falls at home, with one of the main reasons being that patients do not have the correct footwear to use while at home. Falls are a leading cause of injury and hospital admission for older people, and the project addresses this by providing safe, well-fitted slippers to replace old or worn-out footwear, which can contribute to trips and falls.
The Worcester Slipper Swap helps to create a safer environment and promotes overall wellbeing within the community. This initiative most importantly enhances the quality of life for older adults but also reduces the strain on healthcare services by preventing fall-related injuries.
