Many disabled adults and people living with mental health conditions face significant barriers to taking part in physical activity. For some, mainstream sports sessions can feel too competitive, too fast-paced, or simply not designed with their needs in mind. Others experience anxiety, isolation, low confidence, or previous negative experiences that make it difficult to get involved. Conversations with local residents, families, carers and support organisations highlighted a gap in Worcester for a regular, welcoming football session where people could participate at their own pace, free from judgement and pressure.

Community Sports Foundation

That gap inspired the Community Sports Foundation CIC to create the Worcester Sunday KickAbout, a weekly inclusive football session providing a safe, supportive environment for disabled adults and adults with mental health conditions. Delivered in a low-pressure, non-competitive way, the sessions focus on enjoyment, confidence, friendship and wellbeing, helping people get active and make friends. Participants are encouraged to take part in a way that feels comfortable for them, creating an atmosphere where everyone feels valued and included.

The impact has been remarkable. The project now supports between 10 and 14 adults each week, many of whom had previously disengaged from physical activity altogether. Regular attendance has helped participants improve their fitness, build confidence, develop friendships, establish positive routines and reduce feelings of isolation. Most importantly, it has created a genuine sense of belonging, with participants describing the KickAbout as a place where they feel accepted, supported and able to be themselves.

Community Sports Foundation Inclusive Football

Community Sports Foundation CIC sessions are supported by volunteers, families, carers and support workers, all helping to create a calm, encouraging environment. They’ve worked closely with social prescribers, community mental health teams and local support organisations, who can now refer people who would benefit from joining this activity. This strong partnership approach has helped establish the KickAbout as a trusted community resource for people seeking connection, activity and support.

Beyond the weekly football sessions, the project has extended its impact through inclusion workshops for schools, sports clubs and community organisations. These workshops have helped teachers, coaches and volunteers develop practical ways to make their activities more accessible and welcoming. Organisations including Kidderminster Harriers, Sensory Matters, AFC Bromsgrove and The Manor Tennis Club have engaged with the training. In doing so, the project is helping to create wider cultural change across Worcestershire, ensuring more people can access the benefits of sport and physical activity.

  • “It’s the best part of my week, I feel proud every time I pull my gloves on.”
  • “I’ve never felt comfortable joining a football group before, this one feels like home.”
  • “The workshop opened our eyes to how small changes can make a big difference for disabled players.”

The Worcester Sunday KickAbout demonstrates the power of community connections. By bringing together participants, families, volunteers, health professionals, schools, clubs and community groups, the project has built strong local networks that support health and wellbeing far beyond the football pitch.

Community Sports Foundation Inclusion Workshop

This fantastic work has been made possible through a Community Wellbeing Grant from Public Health Worcestershire County Council. But importantly, the project has strong foundations for the future. Community Sports Foundation CIC plans to continue the weekly sessions, expand delivery, develop volunteer coaches and provide more inclusion training for community organisations. With growing demand and strengthening partnerships, the initiative can continue making a positive difference for years to come.
