Steven’s Space: ‘A wish come true’

Jemma Bufton, May 14, 2025May 21, 2025

The Vale of Evesham School has unveiled a new, inclusive gardening area, affectionately named ‘Steven’s Space’. This wonderful addition, made possible by a wellbeing grant from Worcestershire County Council and the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner, is now open for all students to enjoy.

‘Steven’s Space’ features custom-designed raised planting beds, ensuring accessibility for wheelchair users and allowing everyone to participate in gardening activities. The grant not only funded the materials but also enabled staff to receive training in the Thrive Social and Therapeutic Horticulture Practice course.

With this training, staff can guide students in using the Thrive approach to gardening, fostering a supportive and therapeutic environment for years to come. The garden is designed to cater to the diverse needs of all students, providing a space where everyone can thrive.

Gardening is a fantastic moderate physical activity that promotes community and teamwork. It helps reduce stress and anxiety, making students feel more relaxed. Spending time in green spaces and the outdoors also enhances mood and concentration, benefiting students when they return to the classroom.
One student expressed their joy, saying: “Everyone can be out here with their friends. Thank you for making our wish come true.”
