Summary
The Safe Space van marks one year in Worcester, supporting thousands and easing NHS demand. With new funding, it’s expanding services to aid vulnerable individuals and improve the city’s safety.
The Safe Space van in Worcester City is marking its first anniversary with a significant funding boost from the Safer Worcestershire Partnership.
This initiative, launched by Worcester Bid on 15 December 2023, has been key in keeping citygoers safe during nights out, supporting thousands of people in vulnerable situations over the past year.
It is designed to help those who may be injured, lost, or in need of welfare support. The van originally operated on weekends and during late-night events between 10 pm and 4 am. Recently, it has expanded its reach to include daytime operations, providing even broader support to the local community.
In addition to its nighttime role, the van is now collaborating with organisations like the Worcester District Collaborative Support Hub, offering services such as mental health support, social prescribing, and medical assistance during the day. This holistic approach enhances its ability to address a variety of health and wellbeing needs.
The impact of the Safe Space van is evident from its data, which reveals has prevented an estimated £5,000–£6,000 worth of ambulance call-outs monthly. By stepping in to support individuals who might otherwise require NHS services, the initiative plays a vital role in alleviating pressure on local healthcare resources.
The recent funding boost from the Safer Worcestershire grant will enable the Safe Space van to expand its services even further, ensuring it can continue its work in supporting the community and improving the nighttime economy.
The Safer Worcestershire Partnership is a collaboration between Worcestershire County Council’s Public Health team and Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion, which aims to address both physical and mental health challenges that can lead to crime.
The partnership’s grant programme supports initiatives like the Safe Space van, which are making a tangible difference in the city.
The Safe Space van is fast becoming a recognisable fixture in Worcester, with businesses, students, and regular clubbers all appreciating its presence.
By offering practical help and working alongside community organisations, the initiative is building a safer, more supportive environment for everyone in the city.
