In an innovative and unusual approach to promoting health and wellbeing, St Joseph’s Primary School in Malvern has transformed its outdoor space with a brand-new all year sledging slope and picnic area.

Thanks to a Public Health Community Grant this unique project is giving pupils a fresh way to stay active, build confidence, and enjoy the outdoors.

The project was led by Mr Williamson, who worked tirelessly to prepare the area clearing undergrowth, shaping the mound into a safe gradient, and fitting ski mats to ensure the slope could be enjoyed all year round.

His efforts have created a safe, exciting environment where children can challenge themselves and develop new skills.

The new equipment is already making a big difference to pupils’ wellbeing:

  • “Going on the track helps me feel more confident!”
  • “It helps us learn new skills like balancing and taking turns.”
  • “It boosts our self-esteem.”
  • “It helps me challenge myself to try new things and do some harder challenges or go higher on the sledging track.”
  • “We have more fun at breaktimes and it keeps us all happy!”

By encouraging physical activity, teamwork, and resilience, the slope is helping pupils to build healthy habits that will benefit them both inside and outside the classroom.

The addition of picnic tables means children can also enjoy the outdoors in calmer moments, making the space versatile for both active play and social wellbeing. Staff and pupils alike are delighted with the transformation, which has turned a simple mound into a hub of fun, fitness, and friendship.

The school said: “Thank you very much to WCC for allowing us to make our dream a reality!”
