Protecting consumers from banned food colouring

Sam Collison, July 12, 2024July 12, 2024

Worcestershire County Council Trading Standards Officers are working with several local restaurants after banned food colour was found in curries during recent food sampling.

The survey conducted at restaurants and takeaways revealed that out of 15 curry meals sampled, 9 failed to comply with legal standards. Eight meals contained a banned colour and one meal contained colours that are permitted, but exceeded the maximum levels.

The banned food colours do not contribute to flavour and have been linked to hyperactivity in children which includes behaviours such as increased movement, impulsivity, and inattention.

The Trading Standards Service advises and supports businesses to provide trusted and safe products. They protect consumers and the economy by ensuring there is a fair-trading environment.

Officers will be taking follow-up samples at a later date to check that the businesses have made the necessary changes.
