Peaceful space promotes pupil wellbeing

Jemma Bufton, July 11, 2025July 28, 2025

Bellbroughton Primary School in Bromsgrove has opened a brand-new sensory room, designed to support the mental health and emotional wellbeing of its pupils.

This calming, inclusive space is the result of a collaborative effort between the school council, staff, and a Worcestershire Public Health Grant.

The sensory room is filled with carefully chosen items that help children manage their emotions, reduce anxiety, and find peace outside the classroom.

Deputy Head Mr Paul Fearns said: “At Bellbroughton Primary School, we pride ourselves on being Team Bellbroughton, where we flourish together. Supporting our children’s mental health and wellbeing has been a key focus in recent years. Thanks to the initiative of our school council and the support of the Worcestershire Public Health Grant, we’ve transformed our ‘Room of Requirements’ into a dedicated space where pupils can relax, refocus, and be heard.”

Staff at Bellbroughton have also received training to support pupils using the room, ensuring it is a welcoming and effective resource for all.

The sensory room is already making a difference to pupils, and the school hopes it will continue to be a place of peace, support, and growth for years to come.

One pupil said: “The room is a peaceful place where we can relax, feel calm, and just be ourselves. We’ve filled it with amazing things like bean bug chairs, bubble lights, and special toys that help us feel better when we’re anxious or upset.

Another added: “It’s a safe space for everyone, where peace, friendship, and kindness come first. We’re excited to see everyone using it.”
