The Over/Nearly 60s Social Group in St. John’s in Worcester is having a huge impact on its members.
The group is run by its members and caters to adults (nearly and) over the age of 60 in Worcester and surrounding areas, providing opportunities to engage in meaningful activities, meet new people and increase social connections.
Social connection plays a crucial role in the health of older adults, significantly impacting their physical and mental well-being. Strong social relationships are linked to better cognitive function, a reduced risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and dementia and improved mental health outcomes. Additionally, social connectedness can lead to a longer lifespan and a higher quality of life.
One of the 30 active members, Barbara Williams, 90, said: “Staying social and staying involved in your community is good for your mental health and reduces the risk of dementia, keeping us out of hospital and costing the NHS more money. I am so grateful for all the different things we do in this group – there is something for everyone and it makes all the difference.”
The group recently received a Stay Connected grant from Worcestershire County Council’s Public Health Team which has enabled them to expand their activities including going on more trips, hosting guest speakers and the introduction of a fitness instructor offering light seated exercise.
The group meet every Monday between 1pm and 2.30 pm at St Johns Community Centre. For £2 per session, attendees enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits, along with a variety of activities such as, games, quizzes, and bingo afternoons.
