Healthy Worcestershire: Staying active, connected and well

Ali Finn, August 5, 2025August 12, 2025

Worcestershire’s ageing population is growing and so is the need to help older adults stay physically active, socially engaged and healthy.

That’s where Healthy Worcestershire comes in. Our free community-based programme is making a real difference!

Every week, hundreds of older residents take part in friendly, local sessions designed to boost physical health, reduce isolation, and improve overall wellbeing.

The sessions are relaxed, welcoming, and tailored to local needs. They include strength and balance classes to help prevent falls, lifestyle advice on topics like healthy eating and weight management, and community safety talks covering scam awareness and digital inclusion.

Participants are also signposted to nearby walking groups, arts projects, and volunteering opportunities.

As we age, staying physically active becomes more important than ever. Regular movement helps maintain strength, flexibility, and independence. It also reduces the risk of falls, something that leads to over 2,000 emergency hospital admissions each year in Worcestershire.

But it’s not just about exercise. Social connection is vital too. Loneliness and isolation can lead to poor health outcomes, and older adults are often more vulnerable to scams and fraud. Healthy Worcestershire tackles these issues head-on by combining physical activity with social engagement and safety education.

The programme has been evaluated and the results are impressive. 99% of participants reported leading healthier lifestyles, 70% saw improvements in strength, balance, and flexibility, and many noted reduced reliance on emergency and hospital services.

The best way to understand the impact is to hear from those taking part.
