Worcestershire County Council’s Public Health team recently provided a small grant to enhance a community-led meet-up and chat group based in Worcester. With modest funding, the group was able to create promotional materials and host a local event to reach new members
Originally formed with just five members, the group, known as Happy Time, has grown significantly in both size and spirit. Participants began taking ownership of activities, organising events, and supporting one another to sustain and expand their sessions. Today, members connect through a WhatsApp group to plan what’s next, sharing ideas and celebrating small victories together.
Happy Time offers a safe, relaxed space for open conversation, trust-building, and shared creativity. Each member contributes unique skills or hobbies, creating a rich and inclusive environment. Recognising that not everyone is ready for group interaction, they also provide one-to-one support for individuals building confidence at their own pace.
“Happy Time has brought me to find like-minded ladies with similar interests as myself. I have gained confidence and feel less isolated. I look forward to attending the sessions as it brings joy to me. We’re also learning new skills from each other.” — Afsarun
“This group has changed my life for the best. I’m a more confident and positive-thinking person. I’ve met lovely people who are now my friends. I can do things for myself that I hadn’t considered before. Everyone contributes and it’s rewarding to be part of the planning. I love everything about this group—it’s fantastic for my mental health.” — Shelly
This initiative has already made great strides in reducing isolation, improving self-esteem, and enhancing emotional wellbeing. By championing and supporting hyper-local groups like Happy Time, we’re building a healthier, more connected Worcestershire together.
