Burlish Park Primary School in Stourport-On-Severn has transformed an outside space into a new growing area, with a shelter, for use during the school day and as part of their nurture sessions – and the benefits for children’s health and wellbeing are blooming.
Research shows that outdoor learning improves mental health, reduces stress, and supports inclusive education. Children who struggle in classrooms often thrive in hands-on, natural environments that encourage curiosity and collaboration. These spaces offer more than fresh air, they provide calm, creativity, and a sense of belonging.
A Public Health wellbeing grant has enabled the school to realise their ideas for this new outdoor space which will be maintained by pupils for years to come. In short, school gardens are growing more than plants—they’re growing healthier, happier children.
