Jacks Place is a community-based day centre for older adults, adults with disabilities and adults with mental health issues and is situated in a rural location on a working farm in Berrow, near Malvern.
Jack’s Place worked with Sarah Edwards from Spare Room Arts on collaborative visual arts project. Spare Room Arts deliver inclusive, creative workshops for absolutely anybody, regardless of age, ability or background. They use accessible and sustainable materials and are dedicated to guiding and celebrating every participant’s creative voice.
The art piece would be made from cardboard, showcase the beautiful view of the Malvern Hills and feature all the unique things that are important to the clients – giving them a real feel of ownership of the artwork and personal satisfaction. In total, 18 clients took part (including some that stay clear from creative activities usually) as well as 3 staff members.
“I usually like time on my own at Jacks Place as I love the animals and helping with the maintenance tasks but I was coaxed by Sarah the artist into taking part in this project and I really enjoyed it – I liked that she listened to what interested me (music and motor racing) and made them part of the artwork my contribution felt really valued and they are a really important part of who I am and what interests me. ” Jacks Place attendee
“So lovely to see all the gang working together…it was amazing to see every single one of them take part and with such enthusiasm and unity.” Hannah James, Managing Director, Jacks Place Care CIC
The final 3D visual art piece is was showcased at the Community Stories event in May 2024 and has now returned home to Jacks Place.

This story was created as part of the Celebrating Community Stories Project 2023 – 2024. Public Health at Worcestershire County Council worked with organisations across the County to find out what keeps Worcestershire healthy, active and creative.
