Fishing Boosts Youth Wellbeing

Sam Collison, March 4, 2025March 4, 2025

Fishing is proving to be a fantastic way to get young people outdoors, away from screens, and immersed in nature!

Worcester Warriors Foundation is using fishing with young people to support with life skills such as patience, focus, and resilience. Beyond the excitement of catching fish, this offers a peaceful escape and a chance to unwind and reflect, which can significantly boost mental wellbeing. The sense of accomplishment in learning a new skill adds to the experience. It’s a perfect balance of excitement and tranquillity, helping to reduce stress and foster mindfulness and emotional health.

This initiative, funded by Worcestershire County Council’s Public Health wellbeing grant in partnership with West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner, targets 12–16-year-olds who are not in education, struggling in school, disengaged, or facing barriers to extracurricular activities.

Since June 2024, Worcester Warriors Foundation has worked with 70 young people across Worcestershire. Feedback indicates that participants gained a greater understanding of the benefits of the great outdoors and nature. For many, this was their first experience of sitting in nature for any length of time.

Participants will have the opportunity to engage in this year’s fishing programme again and hopefully encourage others to give it a go in a safe and supported environment.
