Empowering Women Through Music

Females About Music CIC is a Black, female-led organisation, for women, run by women. This is led by Javina Greene, Founder and Director, Precious Waite, Co-Founder and Director, and Beyoncé Gowe, Co-Founder and Director.

This initiative based in the north of Worcestershire, designed to empower women and girls who have experienced challenges, including sexual and racial injustice, substance misuse, socioeconomic disadvantage, and limited access to opportunities within the music industry.

By harnessing the therapeutic power of music alongside comprehensive support, they work to break down barriers, develop personal growth, and create sustainable pathways into the music industry and beyond.

Central to this work is the establishment of peer-to-peer support groups for women who may have survived trauma, providing safe, inclusive spaces where participants can connect, share experiences, and begin to heal together.

Females About Music delivered a series of pop-up taster sessions, funded by the Worcestershire County Council Community Wellbeing Grant and delivered in collaboration with Poison Ivy, run by Maddie, the Founder. These sessions were designed to bring women from diverse backgrounds out of isolation and into a supportive community of like-minded women, helping to build confidence and long-lasting relationships.

Participants said:

“For the first time in years, I had a sense of purpose. The warmth in those sessions, from women of all different backgrounds, completely blew my mind.”

“They helped me! This project hears what we need to be safe and inspired. We showed that we as women want to be together. We want to share each other’s skills, experiences, and wisdom to help each other be the best we can be.”

Financial and geographical barriers were removed by offering the sessions free of charge and locally within Bromsgrove. Activities included music, arts and crafts, makeup, and self-care, creating an accessible and nurturing environment that encouraged participation, creativity, and wellbeing.
