Across Worcestershire, there’s a growing need for opportunities that help people stay socially and physically active—especially those who face barriers to participation due to age, ability, or isolation. Communities are seeking ways to come together, move more, and support one another in leading healthier, happier lives.
A local Worcester organisation, Freedom Activities CIC, dedicated to delivering inclusive, uplifting, and empowering sports and physical activity sessions -is making that vision a reality!
With support from a Worcestershire County Council Public Health wellbeing grant, Freedom Activities CIC has expanded their reach—offering safe, welcoming spaces where people of all ages and abilities can take part in non-competitive activities that support both physical and mental wellbeing.
Their current sessions include:
- Walking Netball
- Walking Football
- Boccia
- “Young At Heart” exercise classes
These activities are more than just exercise—they’re a lifeline. Participants report feeling healthier, more confident, and less isolated. The sessions help build emotional resilience and foster meaningful social connections, with many attendees forming lasting friendships and rediscovering a sense of belonging.
One of the most powerful outcomes of the grant is sustainability. What began as a funded initiative has now grown into a regular part of community life. Groups continue to meet weekly, supported by volunteers and local champions, ensuring the impact endures well beyond the initial funding.
Freedom Activities CIC is a shining example of how targeted support can unlock potential, reduce health inequalities, and build stronger, more connected communities—one session at a time.
Mike, diagnosed with Parkinsons, explained how the group helps him: “It has been a lifesaver for me, suddenly I met 20 guys in the same boat as me. We all help each other and have a great time together”.
Neil said “It takes you back, makes you feel young again, like the old days”.
