Creativity bringing people together in Clent
Clent Village Artists have shown how powerful creativity can be when it comes to improving wellbeing and helping people feel less alone.
When the group spoke to residents in Clent they found people wanted more chances to meet other, stronger social connections and better support for their mental wellbeing.
Loneliness came through as a major issue, especially for older residents. National research backs this up too, showing how creative activity can lift confidence and reduce isolation.
The group already knew this from experience. Their weekly art club had become a place where friendships formed naturally.
A small Community Wellbeing Grant from Public Health at Worcestershire County Council allowed them to go further. They designed a programme that opened the doors to people who couldn’t usually join weekday sessions — those working, studying, caring, or feeling too anxious to walk into a regular class.
The extra professionally led workshops were held at Clent Parish Hall alongside the usual art club with 179 people taking part.
The impact for attendees was huge.
Paul said: “Having retired early I was concerned about how to occupy myself and meet others… Clent Village Artists has given me a positive way to spend my time and meet new people. The mindfulness of it keeps me very positive.”
Stephen, now on the committee, said: “I’ve always wanted to learn to paint but all the opportunities were in town… Now I’m part of a fantastic group in my own village. I’m part of the team instead of sitting at home looking at four walls.”
The benefits stretched beyond the workshops. Clent Connect’s café and shop opened on workshop days and saw new visitors coming through. A new projector, bought through the project, improved accessibility for people with sight loss. Leaders also learned more about adapting sessions for different needs, helping make the group more inclusive long‑term.
The committee has grown in confidence too. New volunteers have stepped into leadership roles, and the group is already planning monthly professionally led workshops. They’re even considering a second venue to widen their offer.
What started as a small idea has shown how creativity can transform health and wellbeing. It can reduce loneliness, build confidence, create friendships and strengthen community life.
Clent Village Artists have proved that when people come together to make something, everyone gains something in return.
