Connecting Generations with Tea Dances

Sam Collison, November 23, 2024November 23, 2024

The Tea Party Project, delivered by Everybody Dance, is making waves in the Malvern community by fostering cross-generational connections through the timeless joy of tea dances.

Designed for elders living with dementia and long-term health conditions, alongside their carers and local young people, this participatory project has been bridging generational gaps in a fun, engaging, and meaningful way.

The Tea Party’s are interactive events which combine music, dance, conversation as well as Dementia information sessions. These sessions are designed to tackle the issue of isolation by encouraging community support and connection for both those affected and their caregivers.

Tea Partys have been hosted in both residential care homes and Dementia meeting centres, and have seen great success in building confidence, reducing social isolation, and encouraging creative interaction. Participants, aged 3 to 94 have joined in, making the events a truly all-inclusive experience.

“We were expecting a tea dance, but Rachel went the extra mile and arranged to bring young dancers from the local high school. These young people followed her example, talking to people, dancing with those who could not stand as well as those who could, and raising smiles throughout the room with their sheer love of music and dance. A fantastic opportunity for generations to learn from and enjoy each other’s company. The event was a tonic” – Malvern Dementia Meeting Centre

Importantly, the project has highlighted the importance of supporting people living with dementia and other health conditions in a way that encourages social interaction and promotes well-being. Everybody Dance is eager to expand the initiative, and discussions are currently underway with to further develop the Tea Party Project.
