The Beacon Pupil Referral Unit in Redditch was looking for ways to help children manage their emotions. They found an intervention helping children identify emotions through play, using Lego.
Mood Busters helps primary school children understand and manage their emotions. It builds resilience and encourages them to talk about their feelings. Using bricks and elements, pupils express themselves, work together, and learn problem-solving. The program also helps them share experiences and coping strategies, empowering them to take responsibility for their feelings and become more self-reliant.
A small Public Health wellbeing grant from Worcestershire County Council and the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner enabled the school to purchase Lego resources used by children in the sessions and to train staff to deliver the Mood Busters sessions for their outreach service in schools across the North East of Worcestershire.
Julie Wynne, Deputy Head and SENCo said: “These benefits will be hugely impactful for our pupils, all of whom have significant and often complex social, emotional and mental health needs. All our pupils have been permanently excluded from schools due to the acute nature of their social, emotional, and mental health needs. Mood Busters provides a very engaging tool to support our pupils and reduce their barriers – enabling them to connect and engage more safely in the world around them.”
