For some students, taking part in physical activity at school is not easy. Lack of confidence, the environment and feeling uncomfortable around others can all be barriers to engaging.

The De Montfort School in Evesham, is committed to removing those barriers and getting all students engaged in exercise. With support from a Worcestershire County Council Public Health Grant, the school has been able to update its fitness equipment and create a more inclusive space where students can engage with physical activity in a way that works for them.

The school now runs three after school sessions, with the flexibility to offer girls-only provision. This has made a noticeable difference, helping more students feel comfortable enough to take part.

One student said: “I like the safe space to exercise away from the boys. It is really good that we have a free gym at school.”

Students are also gaining confidence in how to use equipment safely and independently, building skills they can carry with them beyond school.

Tom Allcoat, Head of PE at The De Montfort School, said: “Physical wellbeing is a main focus at TDMS and creating a safe and engaging fitness suite environment has helped us achieve this for all students. We are hugely grateful for the grant. It has made a huge difference.”

Physical activity plays an important role in helping young people stay engaged in education, supporting both their physical health and mental wellbeing. By creating a space where students feel comfortable taking part, the school is helping to build confidence and establish positive habits that can continue into adulthood.
