At Crowle CE First School, a simple but powerful idea is making a noticeable difference to pupils’ wellbeing.
With a growing awareness of children experiencing anxiety or low confidence, the school recognised that supporting emotional health is just as important as academic progress. The headteacher, Martina Abbott, wanted to introduce an approach that would help children feel calm, happy, and ready to learn, whilst also strengthening the sense of nurture at Crowle CE First School.
Through an Educational Wellbeing Grant from Worcestershire County Council, the school was able to access specialist training with the Dog Mentor programme to help Edie take up her role, implemented in a structured, safe and meaningful way. Edie’s presence has been carefully embedded into school life, with staff supported to use her as part of a wider wellbeing approach.

Edie has become a much-loved and valued member of the school community. She offers a calm presence, creating opportunities for pupils to feel more relaxed and supported throughout the school day, often at the school gates on arrival in the mornings.

For pupils feeling anxious or worried, spending time with Edie provides comfort and helps them grow in confidence to engage with school activities or speak to friends and teachers. Further, Edie’s presence has helped to foster a more nurturing atmosphere , with pupils taking on responsibilities to care for her, setting up her water, toys and taking her for walks. Pupil’s explained how she had helped them calm down and open up when feeling upset, and how they enjoyed her being part of their school day.
As a permanent part of the school community, Edie will go on providing consistent emotional support for pupils in the years ahead.
