Community Stories 2025 | Knockout success at boxing club

Jemma Bufton, October 21, 2025November 3, 2025

Pete Martin, director of Redditch Self Defence Association, is working with young people to improve their lives, prevent them from engaging in crime and harness the power of physical activity for their self-esteem and mental health.

After opening its doors just twelve months ago the boxing club was overwhelmed with people wanting to sign up. After seeing the impact the sessions were having on the community Pete wanted to do more.

With the support of a Public Health Community Wellbeing grant Pete was able to offer four new classes, purchase more equipment and now takes on referrals from organisations including schools, colleges and the police.

The sessions are transforming the lives of the young people who attend, building their confidence, giving them a sense of purpose and community, pushing them to re-engage with education and reducing the risk of getting involved in criminal activity.

One young person said:

“Coming here has helped boost my confidence, if I didn’t get referred to Pete I probably wouldn’t have gone to college.”

This inspiring project was showcased in our Community Stories 2025 Event, celebrating the incredible work of grant-funded organisations across Worcestershire.
